Why Most New Instructors Feel Underprepared

If you train with some big brands like RED, AA or Drive they may deliver only the DVSA minimum recommended training hours, you may qualify — but many new instructors still feel nervous, under-skilled, and unsure how to attract new learners. They do this to keep their costs down and maximise profit resulting in:

Minimum legal training, not comprehensive coaching

No recognised qualification at the end

Business and diary-filling skills often left out entirely

Cheap upfront training which may be recouped by tying you into a long contract through which you'll pay thousands more in the long term!

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about our services? You're in the right place!

Question 1: Is the Introduction to Driving Education Award a recognised qualification?

Yes. The qualification completed the quality assurance process with the Scottish Qualifications Authority in April 2025.

The qualification is an SQCF level 5 qualification which is the equivalent difficulty level of a high grade GCSE.

Question 2: How long will it take to study and complete the award?

There are 13 units in total for the Introduction to Driving Education Award and we suggest that all 13 are completed within a two year period to gain the full qualification.

The average student will be able to complete the Award in approximately 250 hours (includes attending modules, research, study and assignments)

Question 3: How do we complete assignments?

The qualification has been designed using a variety of assessment methods:

In-Car Units will include practical tasks, observations and question and answer sessions.

There are several online quizzes which are automatically marked.

Some assignments ask you to complete a practical task and reflect on your experience.

Assignments that ask a question require you to submit your answer using your preferred method - this could be in writing, audio, video.

Assignments are not a judgement of your writing or academic skills and we do not want them to be an obstacle for your development! The aim is that assignments give you an opportunity to apply what you have learnt, consolidate your knowledge and understanding and allow you to practice your delivery skills in a safe environment.

Question 4: Who do I book the in-car units through?

PDIs (and ADIs) can book online units and the qualification element of in-car training units through the IDEA website. Trainer's fees for delivering the in-car units should be agreed and paid directly to your trainer.

We are suggesting that the Introduction to Driving Education Award is sold on a unit pay as you go basis to help you spread the cost and ensure that you don’t pay for an expensive qualification upfront and then life changes or you change your mind.

TESTIMONIALS

What others are saying

— Dan Baines

I recently qualified as an Approved Driving Instructor with Chris Barker and couldn’t be happier with the standard of training I have received.

I’ve wanted to be a driving instructor since my teens and it was my desire to be the best client-centred driving instructor I could be. When looking for a trainer, my priority was to look for someone who was exactly the kind of instructor I wanted to be and after reading some reviews and meeting him for a coffee, it was clear to me that Chris would be the ideal role model to follow and signed up to train with him. Chris was always available to provide advice, further training and sometimes even emotional support when things became particularly challenging. Chris’s expert advice and support allowed me to build on my skills and not only enabled me to pass all three ADI tests and become a qualified driving instructor, but has set me in good stead to becoming the driving instructor I’ve always dreamed of becoming. It’s a true honour to be a member of the team and cannot recommend Driving Skills Academy enough for driver and instructor training

— Gary Desborough

I met Chris Barker from Driving Skills Academy and I knew after our first meeting I wanted learn and train with him.

I looked into training with a couple of the big franchises and wasn't convinced it was a good idea to go with them.

I'd previously worked in the building manufacture industry for 26 years and I needed a change.

Chris made me feel so welcome to Driving Skills Academy and the support you get is fantastic through every step of my journey. He was always honest with my progress and everything we done, I'm so happy I made that great choice last year. I passed my part 2 on my first attempt and just passed my part 3 on my first attempt and now I'm a full qualified ADI, I can't thank Chris enough for what he's helped me achieve in the last 12-13 months. I'm staying on the franchise because of the support I'm still getting is incredible. If you wanted a change of career as a driving instructor, Driving Skills Academy 100% any day of the week 😊
